Highlight on full-grain leather

At Pied de Biche, our full-grain, natural beef leather is enriched with fat during the tanning process.
This manufacturing step gives it its distinctive, characteristic appearance.

What is full-grain fat leather?

To qualify as fat leather, a hide must be infused with at least 15% of its weight in oil or fat. By comparison, smooth leather contains about 8% fat.
More durable and water-resistant than other types, it is often used for technical footwear. Hiking boots, safety shoes, but also trendy loafers — fat leather has become a staple! your image

How to recognize fat leather?

Very recognizable by touch, fat leather has a distinctive “greasy” feel when you run your fingers over it. Far from unpleasant, it is especially soft.
Run your finger inside the shoe, and you’ll notice it stretching slightly. It lightens exactly at the same spot — this is the main characteristic of fat leather!

Pull-up leather, a close relative of fat leather, is even more sensitive to this phenomenon.
Our pairs crafted with this type of leather will beautifully develop a patina over time, gaining character with each wear.

Fat leather is much easier to care for than smooth leather. Follow our guide, we’ll show you how!

Restoring the leather’s original look

To bring back its initial appearance and color, simply nourish it with a suitable conditioner to soften it.
Your leather will look as good as new, hydrated and revitalized!
Remember to brush it lightly beforehand to remove dirt. your image your image

The right techniques

Equip yourself with seal fat (à appliquer with a soft cloth), or better yet, a can of rejuvenating oil. Spray it from about fifteen centimeters onto your shoes, and it will immediately nourish, soften, and protect the leather.
