Highlight on full-grain leather
At Pied de Biche, our oiled leather is a very natural full-grain cowhide leather, enriched with oils during the tanning process.
This manufacturing step gives it its distinctive appearance.
What is oiled leather?
To be classified as oiled leather, a hide must be enriched with at least 15% of its weight in oil or grease. By comparison, smooth leather contains around 8% fat.
More robust and water-resistant than other leathers, it is often used for technical footwear such as hiking or safety shoes, but also for more fashion-forward styles. Oiled leather has become a true essential!
How can you recognize oiled leather?
Very easy to identify by touch, oiled leather has a slightly “greasy” feel when you run your finger over it. Far from unpleasant, it is actually very soft.
If you press your finger inside the shoe, the leather is stretched, and you’ll notice it lightens exactly at that spot—this is the main characteristic of oiled leather!
Pull-up leather, a close relative of oiled leather, is even more sensitive to this effect.
Shoes made with this type of leather will develop a beautiful patina over time, gaining character with every wear.
Oiled leather is much easier to care for than smooth leather. Follow our guide—we’ll show you how!
Restore its original look
To restore its original appearance and color, simply apply oil or grease to soften it.
Your leather will look as good as new—hydrated and revitalized!
Don’t forget to brush off any dirt beforehand.
Best practices
Use leather grease (applied with a soft cloth), or even better, a renovating oil spray. Spray it about 15 cm from your shoes: it will immediately nourish, soften, and protect the leather.
